Cannabis for Sleep: What Actually Works, From the Sage Seeds Floor

The customer who falls asleep at 11 p.m. but wakes at 3:14 a.m. and cannot turn the brain back off. The customer who has been on melatonin for two years and wants something different. The customer who used cannabis recreationally in their twenties and is now back at 47 because the sleep stopped working. The honest answer is that cannabis can help with sleep for many adults, the wrong product can make sleep worse, and the difference between the two is mostly about format, dose, and what time you take it. What works best for sleep, in plain English

For most adult shoppers, three formats outperform the rest for sleep. Indica-leaning flower smoked or vaporized about 45 minutes before bed produces a fast, predictable wind-down that lasts 2 to 4 hours, which usually covers sleep onset and the first deep-sleep cycle. 5 to 10 mg edibles taken about 90 minutes before bed produce a slower, longer effect, often 5 to 7 hours, which can help with the 3 a.m. wake-up problem. CBN-dominant tinctures are the newer category: CBN is the cannabinoid that forms when THC ages, often paired with a small amount of THC and sometimes melatonin, and customers report that CBN sublinguals feel less "stoned" and more "down for the count."

Strains we point sleep customers to

  • Granddaddy Purple (GDP) — myrcene-heavy, classic indica heaviness, the strain most likely to put you to sleep on the couch. Best for sleep onset, less ideal if you need to function the next morning.
  • Northern Lights — clean indica, milder than GDP, less morning-after grogginess. Our most-recommended sleep flower for first-timers.
  • Wedding Cake — indica-leaning hybrid, body-heavy but with mood lift. For shoppers who want sleep without feeling "shut down."

Format-by-format sleep guide

Flower. Smoke or vape about 30 to 45 minutes before bed. One bowl, not three. The mistake new customers make is overshooting, which produces the racing-heart effect that delays sleep instead of inviting it. Indica flower from our eighth menu is the standard play.

Pre-rolls. A single pre-roll before bed is one of the most reliable sleep formats because the dose is built in. Half a pre-roll is plenty for many shoppers.

Edibles. Start at 5 mg if you have not used cannabis in months. 10 mg if you are a regular. Take 90 minutes before bed, not 30 minutes, because edibles have a slow onset and you do not want the peak to hit when you are trying to fall asleep. Our low-dose edible menu is the right starting point.

Tinctures. Sublingual under the tongue, hold for 60 seconds, swallow. Onset is faster than edibles (about 20 to 40 minutes) because some absorbs through the mouth. Look for CBN-dominant or CBN+CBD sleep tinctures on the tincture menu. Many of these are formulated specifically for sleep and the dose math is simple: one dropper.

Concentrates and live resin disposables. Effective and fast for sleep, but the higher potency makes it easier to overshoot. If you are using a vape disposable for sleep, take one or two pulls, wait 15 minutes, decide whether you need more.

What does not work as well for sleep

Sativa-heavy flower and most live-resin sativa carts will keep some adults up. If you are sensitive to caffeine, you will probably be sensitive to sativas at night. Beverages with under 5 mg are pleasant for evening but rarely sufficient for sleep alone. Topicals do not affect sleep meaningfully.

The 3 a.m. wake-up problem

This is the most common sleep complaint we hear. The customer falls asleep fine but wakes 3 to 4 hours later. For this pattern, edibles outperform flower because the duration matches the sleep cycle better. A 10 mg gummy taken 90 minutes before bed will often still be active during the 3 a.m. window. Some customers add a half-dose CBN tincture at bedside if they wake up: take it under the tongue, let it dissolve, back to sleep in 20 to 40 minutes.
