The three things people call "topicals"
1. Localized topicals (lotions, balms, salves, roll-ons). Applied to skin over a sore spot. Cannabinoids interact with receptors in the skin and underlying tissue. Most adults do not feel any cognitive effect. The relief is local: a knee, a wrist, a low back. Onset 15 to 45 minutes. Duration 2 to 4 hours.
2. Transdermal patches. Designed to drive cannabinoids through the skin and into the bloodstream over a sustained release window (often 6 to 12 hours). Unlike lotions, patches are systemic: you can absolutely feel them. THC transdermals can produce a measurable, mild, slow-onset effect.
3. Bath products and intimate-care topicals. A growing category. Bath soaks, massage oils, and intimate products formulated with cannabinoids. Effect profile depends heavily on formulation. Most are localized, some are mild systemic.
What most customers actually want
The most common Sage Seeds customer in this category is an adult who wants pain or stiffness relief in a specific spot, no cognitive effect, and no smell of cannabis on their clothes. For that customer, a localized THC or 1:1 THC:CBD balm is usually the right answer. The active cannabinoids reach the underlying tissue, the customer gets relief, and there is no impairment to worry about.
The second-most common customer is the adult with chronic pain who has tried every CBD product on the market and is curious about a transdermal patch. For that customer, a THC or balanced THC:CBD patch is the more likely path, with a clear conversation about onset, duration, and the fact that patches do produce a measurable effect.
What localized topicals will and will not do
Will: Relieve surface-level soreness. Reduce localized inflammation for many adults. Help with arthritis-style joint discomfort, post-workout muscle soreness, and minor strains. Provide a cooling or warming sensation depending on formulation (menthol, capsaicin, eucalyptus often added).
Will not: Get you high. Show up on most workplace drug tests at typical use rates (though we never make absolute claims about testing). Treat deep tissue or systemic pain. Replace medical care for a serious injury.
What transdermal patches will and will not do
Will: Produce a slow, sustained, measurable effect over 6 to 12 hours. Help with sustained pain conditions where adults want coverage without redosing. Show up on a drug test if THC content is meaningful.
Will not: Hit you fast. Allow easy dose adjustment after application. Be appropriate for first-time cannabis users in most cases. Substitute for prescribed pain medication.
How to use a localized topical
- Wash and dry the area.
- Apply a generous amount and rub it in for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Wash your hands afterward (avoid eyes).
- Reapply every 2 to 4 hours as needed.
- Patch test on a small area first if you have sensitive skin.
What to look for on the label
- Total cannabinoid mg per container. Total THC plus total CBD.
- Cannabinoid mg per dollop or per pump. This tells you the actual application dose.
- Ratio. Pure THC, 1:1, CBD-dominant, or CBD-only formulations all behave differently.
- Carrier and inactive ingredients. Coconut oil, shea, beeswax bases are common. Look for menthol, arnica, capsaicin, or eucalyptus if you want extra topical action.
- COA available. Reputable NY brands publish a Certificate of Analysis. See our COA guide for what to look for.
Brands and formats on the Sage Seeds shelf
We rotate topicals from NY licensed brands. Common formats include cooling balms, warming salves, roll-ons for targeted application, body lotions for broader use, and patches for sustained release. Our budtenders can match formulation to use case during your visit. Browse the topicals menu and CBD products.
The category most underused by adults over 40
Sage Seeds sees a clear age pattern in this category. Adults over 40, especially those managing knee, back, or shoulder issues, are the topical category's most loyal customers. They tend to buy a balm, use it for two weeks, return for a second one, and become regulars. The category does not have the visual or social appeal of flower or vapes, but for the right customer it is the most consistently used cannabis product they own.
