Cannabis Vape Formats Explained: 510 Carts vs Disposables vs Pod Systems

The vape category at our Bellerose counter has more SKUs than any other format, and most first-time customers are confused by the hardware split. There are three main families of cannabis vape on the New York market: **510 cartridges** that screw onto a separate battery, **all-in-one disposables** with the battery built in, and **pod systems** like Pax Era. Each has tradeoffs in cost, battery life, refillability, and vape experience.

510 cartridges (with battery)

The 510 is the universal screw-thread cartridge format. You buy a cart of cannabis oil (live resin, distillate, or a blend) and screw it onto a 510 battery, which can be reused indefinitely with new carts. Most 510 batteries are simple push-button or draw-activated devices in the $15 to $40 range.

Pros: Lowest cost per gram of oil, widest brand selection, reusable battery means less waste over time.

Cons: You need to own a battery first, hardware quality varies, and connection issues can develop over time.

All-in-one disposables

Disposables come pre-charged with everything in one unit: oil, atomizer, and battery. You vape until empty (typically 0.5 g, 1 g, or 2 g), then dispose. The battery is meant to outlast the oil, so you finish the cart before the device dies.

Pros: Easiest format for first-time vape customers, no compatibility worries, often the format with the freshest live resin batches.

Cons: Higher cost per gram of oil than 510 carts, more hardware waste, no opportunity to switch oils mid-session.

Pod systems (Pax, Stiiizy)

Pod systems use proprietary cartridge formats designed for a specific battery system. Pax Era uses Pax pods. Stiiizy uses Stiiizy pods. The hardware is more refined than basic 510 setups, with features like temperature control, app integration (Pax), and consistent draw quality.

Pros: Premium hardware, consistent vape experience, often premium oil quality.

Cons: Locked into one brand's pod ecosystem, higher hardware cost upfront.

Live resin vs distillate vapes

Within any of the above hardware formats, the oil itself splits into two main categories:

Live resin oil retains the original strain's terpene profile, has more nuanced flavor, and feels more strain-specific. Higher quality, often higher price.

Distillate oil is highly purified THC with terpenes added back in. Cleaner appearance, more uniform potency, often less strain-distinctive flavor. Lower price tier.

Which to choose

If you are new to cannabis vapes: a live resin disposable is the easiest first try. No hardware to buy, full effect on the first pull, easiest to evaluate whether vape format works for you.

If you vape regularly: a 510 battery plus rotating live resin carts is the most cost-effective long-term setup.

If you want premium consistency: a Pax or Stiiizy pod system.
