The four enemies of cannabis flower
- Light. UV breaks down THC and terpenes. Direct sunlight is the worst, indoor light is significant over weeks.
- Heat. High temperatures degrade cannabinoids and dry the flower. The window sill, the top of the fridge, anywhere near a vent or radiator are bad locations.
- Oxygen. Long exposure to air oxidizes THC into CBN (which is sedating but represents potency loss).
- Humidity swings. Too dry (under 55% RH) makes flower harsh and brittle. Too wet (over 65% RH) risks mold. The sweet spot is 58 to 62% relative humidity.
The simple gold-standard storage protocol
- Container: Glass jar with an airtight lid. Mason jars work. UV-blocking jars are better. Plastic bags and clear containers are worst.
- Location: Cool, dark, dry. A drawer, cabinet, closet shelf. Not the fridge (humidity swings are worse there). Not the freezer (trichomes become brittle).
- Humidity control: A two-way humidity pack (Boveda 62 is the most common, Integra Boost is the alternative) inside the jar. One pack per ounce, replace every 2 to 3 months.
- Quantity per jar: Fill the jar 70% full. Too much air space accelerates oxidation; too little risks mold.
That is it. Glass jar, dark drawer, Boveda pack, fill 70%. Cannabis stored this way stays fresh for 6 months easily, often longer.
What about pre-rolls?
Pre-rolls are flower that has already been ground and exposed to air, so they degrade faster than whole flower. Best practice:
- Store unopened pre-rolls in their original tube or jar.
- Once you open a multi-pack, transfer to an airtight container.
- Add a Boveda Original 62 pack to a multi-pack tube to extend life.
- Use within 60 to 90 days for best flavor.
See pre-rolls explained.
What about vapes and concentrates?
Vape carts and disposables. Store upright (mouthpiece up) in a cool dark place. Storing on the side risks oil seepage. Heat is the biggest enemy: never leave a cart in a hot car.
Live resin and live rosin. These are the most temperature-sensitive products on the menu. Refrigerate after opening (sealed silicone container) and consume within 60 days. Live rosin in particular is best fresh.
Distillate concentrates. More stable. Cool dark place is sufficient.
See live resin vs live rosin and vape formats explained.
What about edibles and tinctures?
Gummies and chocolates. Cool dark place. Avoid heat (chocolate melts; gummies fuse). Most NY edibles last 6 to 12 months in stable conditions.
Tinctures. Store upright in original bottle. Cool dark place. Most NY tinctures last 1 to 2 years. The dropper rubber can absorb terpenes over time, which is normal.
How to tell if your cannabis has gone bad
- Smell: Faint, dusty, or musty (not the original aromatic profile)
- Look: White or grey fuzz (mold) — discard immediately. Yellowing or browning trichomes — significant degradation.
- Touch: Bone-dry and crumbling, or unusually wet and sticky
- Taste: Harsh, papery, or off
If you suspect mold, do not smoke or vape it. The cost of a new eighth is much less than a respiratory infection.
Common storage mistakes
Storing in the original mylar bag long-term. The bag is fine for the first week or two. After that, oxygen permeation accelerates degradation. Transfer to glass.
The freezer myth. Freezing cannabis sounds smart but the trichomes (where most of the cannabinoids and terpenes live) become brittle and can break off. Save freezing for live resin if you must.
The fridge. Refrigerator humidity swings every time the door opens. Worse than a closet drawer for flower.
Hot car. A car in summer regularly hits 130+ F. Cannabis left in a car for an afternoon loses noticeable potency and flavor.
