Distillate, Hash, and Traditional Concentrates at Sage Seeds Bellerose: The Working Categories
Beyond live resin and live rosin, the concentrate shelf includes the categories that built the cannabis industry: distillate, hash, kief, shatter, and the older BHO formats. Each has a job. Distillate dominates edibles and value carts. Traditional hash is the slow-burn classic for purists. Here is the working version of these workhorse concentrates.
Concentrates. the essence, refined.
Live rosin, live resin, hash, badder, and budder. Solventless and solvent-extracted. For the connoisseur and the bowl-topper alike.

Distillate
Distillate is the most-refined cannabis concentrate. It is THC (or CBD) isolated to 90%+ purity through multi-pass distillation. The result is an odorless, tasteless, golden-amber oil.
Why distillate matters:
- Most edibles use distillate as their THC active ingredient (precise dosing)
- Value vape carts use distillate as the base oil (then add reintroduced terpenes for flavor)
- Tinctures and beverages typically use distillate
What distillate is not: Distillate is not a flavor-forward dab format. The distillation process strips terpenes. If you want flavor, choose live resin or live rosin. Distillate is engineering, not craft.
Pricing: Distillate runs $20 to $35 per gram, the lowest of the concentrate tier.
Hash (traditional pressed hash)
Hash is the original cannabis concentrate, made by separating trichomes from flower (sieved, agitated, or pressed) and compressing them. Modern NY hash on the Sage Seeds shelf includes:
Bubble hash (ice water hash). The unpressed precursor to live rosin. Loose, sandy, golden. Sprinkled on flower or smoked solo.
Pressed hash. Compressed bubble hash bricks. Smoked or vaporized. The traditional category most adults associate with the word "hash."
Temple ball hash. Hand-rolled pressed hash, often aged. Premium artisan format.
Why traditional hash: Solventless. Long history. Distinct burn and flavor profile that flower or vape cannot replicate. Loyal customer base of adults who grew up with it.
Kief
Kief is the loose powdery trichome residue collected from flower (often via grinder kief catcher or sifting). Sprinkled on top of a bowl, rolled into a joint, or pressed into rosin. The most basic concentrate, and the cheapest at typically $10 to $20 per gram on the NY shelf.
Shatter and wax (the older BHO formats)
Before live resin became dominant, shatter (glass-like translucent BHO) and wax (opaque crumbly BHO) were the standard concentrates from 2014 to 2020. They are still produced and still on some NY shelves but the category has largely been replaced by live resin (which is fresher, more flavor-true, and same general process).
If you see shatter or wax on a NY menu, it is typically a value concentrate at $20 to $35 per gram. Effect is similar to other BHO formats; flavor is generally less expressive than live resin.
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) and FECO
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) and FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) are full-plant ethanol-extracted concentrates intended for oral use, often by adults using cannabis for medical purposes. Sold in syringes, dosed in rice-grain portions on a piece of bread or under the tongue. Very high potency (typically 60-80% cannabinoid). Long onset (similar to edibles). See medical cannabis NY for context.
How to dab traditional concentrates
For shatter, wax, and traditional BHO:
- Heat banger to 600 to 650 F (similar to live resin)
- Wait 30 seconds for cool-down
- Drop a rice-grain portion
- Cap with carb cap
- Inhale slowly for 4 to 6 seconds
For hash and kief, the traditional method is smoked in a bowl, joint, or pipe rather than dabbed. Hash can also be vaporized in a dry-herb vaporizer at 350-380 F.
Where these concentrates go wrong
Treating distillate like a flavor-forward dab. It is not. If you bought distillate expecting live-resin flavor, you bought the wrong product.
Buying old shatter. Shatter that has been on a shelf for 6+ months degrades into a dull amber consistency. Check for fresh, glassy clarity.
Smoking moldy hash. Old or improperly stored hash can develop mold. Smell it; if anything is off, do not consume.
Storage
All concentrates: cool dark place, original silicone or glass container, away from heat. Distillate is the most stable (12-month shelf life standard). Live resin and rosin are most temperature-sensitive.
